Our Career Coach, Jessica Holtsclaw, shared why experiences like this matter:
“Job shadowing for high school students is so important because this is a stage when many students are still figuring out who they are and what they want. It’s a day to leave the comfort of their classwork and challenge themselves in a work environment and meet new people. When students see successful professionals thriving in their own backyard, they begin to imagine futures they hadn’t considered before. They discover that meaningful careers don’t always require leaving home. Sometimes, the most rewarding path leads right back to the community that raised them.”
We’re proud of our seniors for stepping out of their comfort zones and thankful for the staff and community partners who make experiences like this possible.

Once a Laker, Always a Laker.

Recently, our seniors stepped out of the classroom and into the workforce during Shakamak’s Job Shadow Day. Students spent the day with local businesses exploring potential career paths and learning firsthand what their future careers could look like.
Cameran Paulin, who visited "Peabody Bear Run Mine" shared, “I really liked how involved IT was with the mine. Eric Griffith showed and explained everything thoroughly and always asked if we had questions. I learned that technology is constantly changing and expanding — especially with internet and Wi-Fi across the mine. One thing that surprised me was that IT doesn’t always mean sitting at a desk with a computer.”
Experiences like this help students connect classroom learning with real careers while discovering paths that fit their interests and strengths.
We are grateful to the many local businesses that opened their doors to our students and helped make this day possible.

Shakamak Lakers Boys Basketball Sectional Highlight Round 1 Recap (2026)Shakamak Class of 2024 graduate Jace Gambill created this highlight video from Tuesday night’s sectional game as part of his broadcasting coursework at Vincennes University.
While at Shakamak, Jace participated in our partnership with VU studying Audio Recording. It’s great to see him continuing to build those skills.
We’re proud of our alumni, and excited about exploring ways to expand media and broadcasting opportunities for our current Shakamak students right here at home next year.

Strong starts build strong Lakers. High-quality preschool experiences increase kindergarten readiness and lay the foundation for lifelong learning, and we’re excited to open a new classroom for our 3-year-olds!

During National Engineers Week, our 6th graders welcomed Keegan Dunn from HWC Engineering, who shared what civil engineers do, his role as a PE Project Manager, and highlighted a project at Shakamak State Park. Real-world connections make learning meaningful, and local!

This past week, during National Engineers Week, our 7th & 8th graders had the opportunity to hear from Jacob Warner with Kaskaskia Engineering Group. He shared what civil engineers actually do day to day and how STEM skills open doors right here in our area. We love giving our students chances to see how what they’re learning today can turn into meaningful careers tomorrow.

FFA dress-up days for Feb. 23rd - 27th.

Current forecasts indicate the possibility of large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornado activity reaching our area earlier. While not every location will experience severe weather, conditions during our regular dismissal window could become unsafe.
We will follow our established early dismissal procedures. All after-school activities, practices, and REACH are cancelled. This does not impact early dismissal tomorrow.
