Crossroads Academy

Education isn't one-size-fits-all. Neither are students.

No two students learn exactly alike. While the traditional classroom remains the best fit for the overwhelming majority of students, we recognize that some families need something different. Whether you're looking for a traditional school experience, greater flexibility, a fully virtual option, or you're a homeschool family seeking additional support, Shakamak now offers multiple pathways designed to meet students where they are.

No matter which pathway a student chooses, they will receive:
✔️ A tuition-free public education
✔️ Licensed teachers
✔️ Personalized support
✔️ A school-issued device
✔️ Opportunities to participate in athletics, clubs, and student organizations (in accordance with Indiana law, IHSAA rules, and district policy)

We aren't changing who we are. We're expanding how we serve students.

If you're a family from inside or outside the Shakamak School District, we invite you to explore the pathway that's right for your child.

New Statewide Cell Phone Policy

Beginning this school year, Indiana's new SEA 78 requires every public school to implement a bell-to-bell wireless communication device policy.

At Shakamak, students will keep personal devices turned off and stored away throughout the school day.

Elementary: Devices should be turned off and stored in backpacks.

Jr./Sr. High: Devices should be turned off and stored in lockers.

Personal wireless communication devices—including cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds/headphones, gaming devices, and similar devices—may not be used during the school day except as permitted by law or district policy.

Exceptions include:
✔️ Teacher-directed use of school-issued technology
✔️ Documented medical accommodations
✔️ IEP or Section 504 accommodations
✔️ Required language translation services
✔️ Other exceptions permitted under state law

Thank you for partnering with us to create a focused, safe, and respectful learning environment where every student can succeed.

New Wireless Device Policy

Some of the best learning doesn't happen inside four classroom walls.

Over the past year, our students have had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and work alongside Andrea Duncan, Friends of Shakamak State Park, park staff, and other community volunteers on a truly meaningful project right here in our own backyard.

Our students experienced STEM in a way that was authentic, hands-on, and connected to their community. More importantly, they learned that they can make a real difference in the places they call home.

This project wasn't just about science or engineering, it was about stewardship, service, and building relationships. Watching our students collaborate with community members, ask thoughtful questions, and take pride in caring for Shakamak State Park has been a reminder of what learning can look like when we connect it to the real world.

A special thank you to Andrea Duncan, Friends of Shakamak State Park, Rural Schools Collaborative Grants in Place, and everyone who invested their time, knowledge, and encouragement in our students throughout this project. We are grateful for partners who help create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

At Shakamak, we believe learning is strongest when it connects students to their community and this project is a wonderful example of that in action.

Playing a little catch-up on some great school events from this spring , and there may be a few more throwback posts coming soon!

In April, Shakamak students traveled to WestGate for the annual Crane Engineering Design Competition. Students worked in teams to code robots and navigate an obstacle course, putting their problem-solving and critical thinking skills to the test. Proud of our students for representing Shakamak so well!
