Principal’s Message

As the Principal of Shakamak Jr/Sr High School, I want to welcome you to our website.  I also would like to share some information about our school.  At Shakamak, we are proud to offer a small-school, well-rounded education to all of our students.  Students will have the opportunity to take classes in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies as well as Agriculture, Art, Band, Business, Choir, Family & Consumer Science, Graphic Design, Health, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish.

Shakamak Jr/Sr High School’s current final letter grade for school accountability as assigned by the Indiana Department of Education is an “A”.  Based on information from US News and World Report school rankings, Shakamak Jr/Sr High School would be a Top-10 Class A school for the education provided to our students.  I can also assure you that we are always striving to improve the educational opportunities provided at Shakamak.

Shakamak Jr/Sr High School offers a wide variety of Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit course options to our students.   AP courses offered are Calculus and Chemistry.  We also have the ability to offer Dual Credit courses in partnership with Ivy Tech in Calculus, College Algebra, Trigonometry & Analytic Geometry, Quantitative Reasoning, English Composition, Introduction to Literature, Interpersonal Communications, Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, US History, American History I, Introductory Biology, Art Appreciation, Survey of Art & Culture, Ag Mechanization, Advanced Animal Science, Horticulture, Landscape Management, and Survey of Agriculture.  With these course offerings, over 90% of the students in the Class of 2021 earned dual credit with 20% of the students earning more than 20 hours of college credit.  The Class of 2021 earned over 750 college credits which if used would be a total approximate savings of over $115,000.  Also through dual credit, 9 students in the Class of 2021 as well as 11 students in the Class of 2020, 8 students in the Class of 2019, and 4 students in the Class of 2018 earned the Indiana College Core Certificate.  The Indiana College Core Certificate ensures that 30 hours of general education college credit can transfer as a block and count between any public college or university in Indiana.  Students have also earned dual credit in ELED 200: Best Practice in Teaching through Indiana State University during an Education Professionals experience.

Shakamak Jr/Sr High School is also a part of the Twin Rivers Career and Technical Cooperative.  This partnership gives our students the opportunity to take hands-on courses away from the Shakamak campus in fields such as Automotive, Construction, and Health Sciences during their Junior and Senior years.  In addition to the valuable experience gained in the Twin Rivers program, some classes also allow students to earn Dual Credit.  In 2021, four (4) Health Science students earned their Certified Clinical Medical Assistant certification.

Besides the well-rounded course offerings, students also have the opportunity to participate in co-curricular activities at the local, state, and national levels.  These activities include Academic Teams, Band, Choir, FFA, FCCLA, and Robotics.  Other clubs/activities offered at Shakamak are Student Council, National Honor Society, Pep Club, FCA, Media Club, Science Club, Creative Writing Club, Foreign Language Club, Chess Club, Art Club, SADD, and Prom Committee.

Shakamak Jr/Sr High School also offers students the opportunity for athletic participation in our Athletics program which has a long history of success.  We are a member of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference (SWIAC).  We offer participation in 10 sports as well as cheerleading and dance.  Sports offered for girls are basketball (HS & JH), cross country (HS & JH), softball (HS), track (HS & JH), and volleyball (HS & JH).  Sports offered for boys are baseball (HS), basketball (HS & JH), cross country (HS & JH), golf (HS), and track (HS & JH).  Our success can be seen by the 51 Sectional, 19 Regional, and 8 Semi-State Team Championships that we have won.  The baseball team also won the IHSAA Class 1A State Championship in 2008 and 2014.  In our Individual sports, we have had 20 Team Regional Qualifiers, and the 2018 Girls’ Cross Country Team was a Team Semi-State Qualifier.  We have also had many individual athletes qualify for the Regional, Semi-State, and State Championship competitions.  We are also proud of our athletes off the field including having four named as the LV Phillips Mental Attitude Award winner for Class 1A Baseball – Steven McNabb (2007), Joshua Horton (2008), Brock Dowell (2012), and Brett Yeryar (2014).

Shakamak Jr/Sr High School is a GREAT place to get a well-rounded education where students are the center of instruction.  If you ever have any questions about Shakamak, please contact the school by phone at 812-665-3550 or feel free to email me at [email protected].
